Narcissistic personality disorder — one of several types of personality disorders — is a mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others. In the realm of abuse to children and families, a common trait of perpetrators is narcissistic pedophilia.
The hallmark trait of narcissist perpetrators with this diagnosis is lack of empathy for others, and a failure to feel remorse for maladaptive behaviors that cause harm to the innocent. People with this disorder have unusual cerebral cortex thinness in the region responsible for empathy production. They also concluded that the degree of lost empathy in NPD patients matches up with the degree of thinness present in the abnormal cerebral cortex area. These individuals have commonality low amounts of grey matter in the brain responsible for empathy and emotion.
Michael Robertson worked at the Maricopa County Psychiatric Annex through the healthcare registry in the 1990s, coming into contact with perpetrators suffering from narcissistic personality disorder. He worked with childhood victims of narcissistic abuse at Arizona Baptist Children's Services and as a Program Supervisor at Community Psychology & Education Services (CPES) in Phoenix, Arizona. Mr. Robertson founded the Counseling Outreach for Battered Women & Abused Children in 2004 to aid families who are victims of such narcissist perpetrators. Presently in 2021, Michael Robertson provides resource referrals for parents and adult survivors of narcissistic abuse as the Clinical Director of The Phoenix Coalition for the Families and Victims of Child Sexual Abuse.

Three of his four children were diagnosed with severe cognitive disabilities in early childhood screenings. These developmental disabilities and early cognitive retardation are indicative of abnormalities in the human brain. The psychological and educational interventions to accelerate his children's cognitive development were highly successful with his children's qualitative and quantitative reasoning, moderately successful in the areas of verbal reasoning and language acquisition, but not successful in the areas of empathy and moral development.. The areas of the children's brain that are responsible for cognitive and emotional empathy are abnormal and was reflected in their cognitive testing and special needs services throughout elementary school years.
Consequently, Mr. Robertson was tasked with the dual responsibility of coping with family members who were victims of abuse and who also had cognitive brain abnormalities identified in their early childhood, leading to adolescent and adulthood symptoms and diagnoses of severe mental illness (SMI) and personality traits on the spectrum of malignant narcissism and Machiavellianism (based on those cognitive and developmental neurological deficiencies and abnormalities identified in early childhood, which is a common neurological factor with individuals suffering from NPD).
